At the age of 16 in Detroit, near Tigers Field, Roy Garza got his first break in the restaurant business. He talked an elderly woman into allowing him to use her restaurant for $10 a month. He was able to put his knowledge and skills to work. By March of 1940 the baseball season started and Roy began to sell his own tacos to many baseball fans.

In the years to follow, Roy acquired the ability to adjust the flavor of his family recipes to taste and aroma. His final recipe mixture was usually based on the public’s approval. His quick success gave him the incentive to open several other restaurants in Chicago and Indiana. He soon learned to put his philosophy into action…good food, fast service, and the need to please the public.

In 1963, Roy and his family headed for California and on their way were persuaded to remain in Rock Island, Illinois. Roy worked for International Harvester. As a second job, Roy made his famous tacos at the Commadore Inn near Farmell Works.

Roy decided to open his own restaurant again. He purchased the Phillips Diner in Geneseo, Illinois and in July of 1971 he established Roy’s Taco House. He soon built a reputation for fine food and fast service. People came from miles to see if the news about Roy’s was true. Today those same people and their children come back again and again just to savor a fine meal at Roy’s Taco House. “A FINE FAMILY RESTAURANT FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY AMERICAN OR MEXICAN FOOD.”

In January 1982, John and Kayleen Fulcher purchased Roy’s Taco House. In October of 1985 Roy passed away and is buried in North Cemetery which is just across the street from the restaurant. John has continued Roy’s philosophy of “good food, prompt service in a friendly atmosphere” and will continue to maintain the Garza tradition.

The Roy’s Taco House Family lost “The Boss” on September 1, 2002. John battled cancer for 11 years and inspired many with his positive attitude. His business continues on in his honor through the management team of Kayleen Fulcher and Liz Holt. Thank You to all those who have continued to support us through all our transitions! We appreciate your business and enjoy your smiling faces!
